Glossary

The technical terms used by the television industry, manufacturers and stockists when talking about the switch to digital can be very confusing. This glossary is designed to help demystify the jargon.

If there are terms that you’d like explained, but they aren’t listed below, let us know!

Set-Top Box (STB)

A unit that you can attach between your current TV (probably an analogue receiving TV) and your aerial. In most cases a new aerial isn’t needed, but some older aerials may need replacing. The set-top box acts as the tuner (the part that receives the signal for all the channels) for your TV set and you use its remote to change channels. This is the cheapest way of switching to digital television.
