Freeview Launches New Brand Campaign - The Best Things in Life are Free
- 03 September 2012
Freeview last night launched a major new TV campaign, with a distinctively effervescent creative approach which takes a high-energy studio performance of the 1920s classic song “The Best Things In Life Are Free” as its theme.

The 60-second TV commercial was filmed at the legendary Allan Eaton Studios in Melbourne, and features the Melbourne Ska Orchestra and vocalist Pat Powell performing the title song, with a number of Australia’s favourite TV personalities also in the studio enjoying the party atmosphere of the recording session.

Interspersed with the song’s studio performance are clips from some of Freeview’s best-loved programmes, edited to reflect the upbeat rhythm and song lyrics.
The TVC ends with the tag line “Freeview. The Best TV. Absolutely Free.”

“We’re incredibly excited to be launching this campaign, the first new TV campaign for the Freeview brand in almost two years,” Freeview General Manager, Liz Ross, said.
“It’s really fitting that the creative treatment is so upbeat and it celebrates the fact that the best TV in Australia is free to watch on Freeview, something Australian viewers can be very happy about.

“More Australians than ever are watching Freeview, and with so much great TV to choose from, viewers are the winners.
“This campaign is all about letting people know that Freeview offers a huge choice of top-quality viewing options, and it’s all free,” Ross said.

The new campaign was created by respected advertising executives Ron Mather and Christine Barnes, whose consultancy is It’s The Thought That Counts.

“The campaign is a celebration of free-to-air television on Freeview,” Mather said.

“In developing the campaign, it became obvious that the song that best reflects that position is ‘The Best Things in Life are Free’. It’s the perfect and natural choice and we used the massive variety of Freeview shows to prove the statement.

“Freeview appointed It’s The Thought That Counts to create the new campaign in June, and 10 weeks later it was ready to launch,” Mather said.

The campaign will run for the next six months on all Freeview networks. The campaign includes 60 sec and 15 sec generic versions, as well as four 30 sec genre-based TVCs, including sport, drama, entertainment and comedy.

Production partners included music through Bang Bang Studios, filming through Jon Webb Photography and Concrete Wednesday and post production through Method Studios using the editing skills of Seth Lockwood and Tim Isaacson.

TV is about to get real this April with a bevy of factual, entertainment and reality treats on Freeview – and it’s all for free.

The hit reality The Voice comes to Australia on Nine this month. The show sees four superstar coaches Good Charlotte rocker Joel Madden, international country music star Keith Urban, Grammy Award winning soul singer Seal and Aussie pop princess Delta Goodrem making amateur performers’ dream come true.

Nine also sees the return of popular renovation series The Block, as well as Celebrity Apprentice and GO! has the latest season of The Bachelor. While on Seven, the likes of Kerri-Anne Kennerley, Shannon Noll and Brendan Fevola don sequins and illusion netting for the new series of Dancing with the Stars. The popular returning series Who Do You Think You Are? on SBS ONE delves into the lineage of notable Australians including Kerry O’Brien, Melissa George and Vince Colosimo. Also on SBS ONE is first-run observational documentary series The Family UK, following West Londoners The Grewals as they open their doors to viewers.

ABC1 tracks the ambitious project to bring life back to a NSW town in Country Town Rescue. Filmed over 12 months in Trundle, it’s the compelling story of how ordinary Australians come together to save a small rural town whose falling population threatens its very existence.

Join celebrity chefs on 7Two in Take on The Takeaway as they attempt to convince takeaway junkies to ditch the deliveries and make their own versions of classic takeaway meals.

Meanwhile 7MATE finds the Ice Pilots of Buffalo Airways flying WWII-era propeller planes to remote outposts with vital supplies. Rookie pilots earn their wings as they defy bone-chilling temperatures, blizzards and breakdowns to fly people and cargo across the forbidding Arctic.

For drama lovers Australia’s freshest drama Offspring explodes back onto our screens on TEN. Gold and Silver Logie contender, Asher Keddie, along with the stellar ensemble cast are back in Offspring's highly anticipated return as the messy Proudman family face a tumultuous time ahead.

GEM sees the first-run series return of US hit The Closer. Deputy Police Chief Brenda Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick) runs the Priority Homicide Division of the LAPD with an unorthodox style. Her innate ability to read people and obtain confessions helps her and her team solve the city’s toughest, most sensitive cases.

And for the younger drama lovers, ABC3 has the exclusive second series of Dance Academy. It’s a rollercoaster year for Tara Webster and her friends; friendships and relationships fall apart as new ones are being forged; and rivalry and jealousy kick in as the students are forced to work harder than ever before and a tragedy strikes the Academy which changes the students’ lives forever.

The supernatural flatmates of award-winning British drama Being Human return for a fourth series on ABC2. Being Human is also on ELEVEN.

There’s light relief to be had on ELEVEN with the latest series of US comedy Raising Hope. When we head back to the Chance family home, things are pretty much as they were last year, but when the Chases take a trip to Vegas, Jimmy becomes a musical prodigy and the skeletons from Sabrina’s closet come flying out.

ONE is bringing you fresh and hilarious Comedy Specials every Monday night in April. Tune in to see the best of stand-up from your wisecracking favourites like Jimeoin, Wayne Brady and Kitty Flannigan. Meanwhile the Best of Better Homes and Gardens features on 7TWO.

Former Eastenders star Ross Kemp presents the first run of his BAFTA-winning documentary series, Ross Kemp on Gangs on ONE which takes his investigation of the world’s most notorious gangs to dangerous and far-flung locations. Whether he's meeting brutal Yardie posses in Jamaica, violent football hooligans in Poland, paramilitary gangs in Colombia or the notorious criminal groups in East Timor, it's sure to be a nail biter.

Your favourite reality series continue on Freeview in March, including Seven’s My Kitchen Rules where the action is heating up as the teams head to Kitchen HQ. There'll be thrills and spills as they battle the clock and their nerves to plate up on time. And on 7Mate, catch up with the day-to-day activities of several Cajuns living in the Atchafalaya River Basin swamp in Louisiana, USA, who hunt American alligators for a living in Swamp People.

ABC News 24 has the run-up to the US presidential election covered with its exclusive series Planet America hosted by ABC NewsRadio’s John Barron and erstwhile Chaser Chas Licciardello. During this weekly discussion program they’ll follow and analyse the race to the White House, through the Republican primaries, the debates and the election campaign.

The award winning teen drama series Dance Academy returns on ABC3. Friends and relationships will be tested in the second series as the students are forced to work harder than ever before in preparation for the world’s premiere ballet competition, the Prix de Fonteyn.

First-run drama and old favourites will be on offer this month, with TEN’s blockbuster drama series Homeland continuing following its recent winning run at the Golden Globes. This season’s unmissable US drama brings you a gripping double episode, and the long awaited season finale, as CIA agent Carrie Mathison continues her investigation into Marine Sergeant Nicholas Brody who returns home to the Unites States after being held captive by Al-Qaeda as a prisoner of war for eight years.

Over on GEM, the drama continues with The Closer where Deputy Police Chief Brendan Johnson, who runs the Priority Homicide Division of the LAPD, solves the city’s toughest and most sensitive cases with her unorthodox style. SBS TWO isn’t forgotten in the drama stakes with first run episodes of The Killing, a Danish crime drama series which follows the police investigation of one specific case, day by day, with each hour-long episode covering 24 hours of the investigation.
Freeview Introduces Australia's Smartest Electronic Program Guide
- 28 February 2012
Freeview, Australia’s free digital television service, today officially announced the introduction of the next generation Freeview Electronic Program Guide (EPG), the ‘smartest’ free-to-air EPG available in the Australian market.

Loaded with new and unique features, not seen in any other EPGs built into digital video recorders (DVRs) and set top boxes (STBs), this next generation Freeview EPG represents a major step forward in television technology for consumers.

“This is a very exciting development for Freeview and we’re delighted to be introducing an EPG unlike any other on the market in Australia,” Freeview General Manager, Liz Ross, said.

“For TV viewers, the benefits of the enhanced technology in the Freeview EPG are fantastic, and include functionality that means no one ever needs to miss a single moment of their favourite show or series, even if there are last-minute, unexpected scheduling changes,” she said.

She added that the great news for owners of the first generation of the Freeview EPG is that they do not need to buy a new receiver

“We’ve made it easy for existing owners of a DVR or STB with the Freeview EPG to upgrade to the next generation EPG simply by downloading the necessary software from the manufacturer’s website.” Ross said.

What makes the new Freeview EPG smarter than any rival product is that it has been engineered to use both the broadcast signal and the derived Freeview scheduled data, rather than relying on program schedule data straight from the broadcaster (which is the same data used in, for example, TV guides in newspapers, magazines and on TV guide websites as well as other electronic program guides).

“This is an important distinction because it enables the Freeview EPG to be intuitive.” Ross said.

Because it is so intuitive, the Freeview EPG can alter its program recording times to ensure the right individual TV show or episodes of a series are recorded even if, for example, a major breaking news event, such as a natural disaster, disrupts the free-to-air networks’ scheduling.

“The Freeview EPG which uses MHEG-5 middleware technology receives its information in real time via the broadcast signal and can adjust on-screen data accordingly so the viewer isn’t left wondering what is happening to the program schedule,” Ross said.

The technology that makes the Freeview EPG smarter than any of its competitors is known as the CRID (Content Reference Identifier). Every TV program transmitted on the digital broadcast spectrum is uniquely identified by a CRID and is used by the EPG application.

The CRID codes mean that the Freeview EPG knows exactly when a TV program starts and finishes, even if those times vary from the schedule.

“No viewer will ever need to miss recording the start or finish of a TV program because the Freeview EPG reads the unique code for every program and knows when that program begins and ends. No other EPG built into DVRs in Australia can do that,” Ross said.

Ross said that consumers needed to look out for Freeview EPG branded products when buying a STB or DVR as only those products displaying the logo carry the Freeview EPG. Manufacturers currently certified to include the Freeview EPG in their DVRs are Bush, Grundig and MagicTV. Stay tuned for announcements on other participating manufacturers.

Retailers which stock the new Freeview EPG include Harvey Norman, Big W, Dick Smith, Retravision, and David Jones, with other retailers to be announced soon.

“We’re delighted to be able to offer Australian consumers a better digital TV viewing experience than ever before thanks to the new Freeview EPG,” Ross said.
